2 Timothy 3:15-17 — “God-breathed”
This week we will be studying the Bible–not that we don’t do that every week, but we will be studying what the Bible says about itself. So in both senses of the phrase, we will study the Bible. These three verses in 2 Timothy 3 are foundational to our theology of the Scriptures. Because of that, this Sunday’s sermon will be more “doctrinal” than usual. We will cover a lot of ground, and best of all, we will expose ourselves to a generous amount of other Scriptures that speak to the same subject in different and helpful ways.
I have leaned heavily on our Baptist roots this week; I’ve been spending some time taking in what the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith (commonly called the “Second London Confession”) says about the Bible. It’s a wonderful place to start as we develop our ideas about the Bible, since they make propositional statements about what the Bible is and cite relevant Scripture verses. Needless to say, if you read through all this, you will gain great insight into the history of our Baptist tradition, and you will be blessed by their desire to submit to God’s truth!
